The Mendenhall House c. 1944

In 1948, Hobart Mendenhall, owner of the Oldsmobile dealership located on East Council Street, had this one-story brick home with detached frame garage built by the home builders, Sharpe and Strange.

The asymmetrical home was designed with the roof gable with fanlight window facing the street. Arched doorways are a prominent feature in the home’s living room.

The Mendenhall family was the only owners before the house was purchased by Jim and Betty Carli in 1999. Since then, the Carlis have renovated the upper story, built a brick patio and fishpond, and built a screened-in back porch.

In the guest room, the bed and dresser were hand carved at February hill, Jonesborough, Tennessee, circa 1835. The white wicker desk and chair from the 1920s descended in Jim’s family. China cabinets and sideboard in the dining room are mid 20th century.
